WNO Director Fellowship

Welsh National Opera is delighted to have been chosen as one of 50 host arts organisations offering fellowships as part of the Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries Programme 2020 – 2022. This programme aims to get more people from low socio-economic backgrounds into cultural careers.

The new role of WNO Directing Fellow is aimed specifically at people who have experienced social and/or economic barriers to employment in opera.

We would be pleased to talk with anyone who is interested in developing a career as a Director and learning what that involves within an opera company. Someone who has an interest in the performing arts and what they can offer communities and audiences alike. We want to meet with people who enjoy working collaboratively and on various scales of project, and people who like to change and challenge conceptions through their work.

WNO’s Directing Fellow will work on large-scale new productions and new musical compositions, as well as devising and delivering work as part of our participation and outreach activities, and with WNO’s Associate Artists. The role will include a mix of hands-on practical work, observation, discussion with experienced practitioners and an introduction to further opportunities. This Fellowship is ideally suited to a candidate seeking experience as an assistant director on opera productions large and small, live and digital and we will provide development opportunities, resources, and career assistance during your time with WNO.

Deadline for applications

Director Fellowship Q&A

Join members of WNO's team on Thursday 11 February at 7pm to hear more about the Director Fellowship role and ask questions in confidence.

Aidan Laing (General Director), Kathryn Joyce (Head of Artistic Management) and Hang Barry (HR Manager) will be hosting an informal, drop-in session to talk a little more about what a Directing Fellowship at WNO might look like and to answer any questions potential applicants might have. Anyone is welcome to join this session and all attendees, and their questions, will be kept anonymous.
