28 April 2026

If you’re looking for a family-friendly adventure packed with music, imagination and a touch of theatrical magic, this year’s Play Opera LIVE! promises to deliver exactly that plus so much more. We chatted with Director Caroline Clegg to give us an insight into this topsy-turvy pirate adventure.

Tell us about Play Opera LIVE Shipwrecked!

Play Opera LIVE Shipwrecked! is a swashbuckling tale led by an intrepid sea captain and his loyal companion, Rhydian. Together with their crew, and even the ship’s cat, they set sail in search of a mysterious, mythical island. Legend has it that this hidden destination hosts the annual Strictly Shanty Dance Competition.

To reach it, they must brave a storm and trust the wind. They also run into danger when they come face to face with the powerful Pirate Queen who has ruled the contest for years using Seren, a magical siren whose voice controls the sea.

What makes this show special?

While the story itself is captivating, the visual and musical elements of the show are equally enchanting. From the imaginative creation of the ship to the immersive underwater scenes, the production is designed to spark wonder.

The music is a standout feature, with powerful performances from both soloists and WNO Chorus. One particularly moving highlight is the Easter Hymn from Cavalleria rusticana, the first opera WNO ever performed, showcasing the emotional depth and beauty of operatic singing.

What is it like directing Play Opera LIVE! compared to directing a traditional opera?

Directing a Play Opera LIVE! production differs slightly from directing a traditional opera, mainly due to its shorter format, but the ambition and quality remain just as high. Every detail is carefully crafted, from set and costume to lighting and sound, all working seamlessly together.

What makes Play Opera LIVE! especially unique is its collaborative spirit. The creative process involves not just the director, but also designers, performers, musicians and technical teams. Even existing props and costumes are reimagined and transformed into something entirely new, proving that creativity thrives within collaboration.

Rehearsals are dynamic and playful, with performers contributing their own ideas, helping shape a show that feels fresh, engaging and full of life.

And how will you engage with a younger audience?

Beyond the spectacle, Play Opera LIVE! has a deeper purpose: introducing children and families to the joy of opera.

Opera combines music, drama, dance and visual artistry into one powerful experience. It’s immersive, emotional and, for children, it offers a chance to explore storytelling in a vivid and engaging way, without preconceived notions or barriers.

There’s a common misconception that opera is elitist, but productions like this challenge that idea. When experienced in a relaxed, interactive environment, opera becomes accessible, exciting and deeply enjoyable.

And the impact is real: children leave humming melodies, inspired by what they’ve seen and heard. These early experiences can shape lifelong relationships with the arts or, at the very least, create cherished memories.

Why do you think it’s important that families introduce children to theatre?

In a world increasingly dominated by screens, live theatre offers something irreplaceable: a visceral, shared human experience. It sparks imagination, builds emotional connections, and links us to a rich cultural heritage.

Introducing young audiences to opera isn’t just about entertainment - it’s about nurturing creativity, curiosity and a love for storytelling.

As this year’s Play Opera LIVE! sets sail, it invites audiences of all ages to step aboard, join the adventure, and discover the magic of live performance.
