Support The Makropulos Affair

We are delighted to be bringing another Janacek opera to the stage this Autumn with a new production of The Makropulos Affairconducted by WNO Music Director Tomas Hanus and directed by Olivia Fuchs (Der Rosenkavalier for WNO 2016/2017).

Looking at his operatic output as a whole, what immediately strikes one is the wide range of subject matter and sources that Janáček draws on for his five great operas; and The Makropoulos Affair is probably the most intriguing of them all.

It at first suggests that its subject matter is to be a long-running legal case, an operatic equivalent of Dickens’ Bleak House. But once the main character, Emilia Marty enters the stage, the drama takes a different turn as each of the characters finds themselves drawn to her enigmatic but alluring persona.

And by the third act, it becomes clear that its subject matter is something completely different, but a theme that affects us all – our mortality.
