Der Rosenkavalier Strauss
–Overview
If you love somebody, set them free
Unfortunately, current restrictions around rehearsals, performances and social distancing mean it will not be possible to perform Der Rosenkavalier as part of our Spring 2021 Season due to the size of the Company and scale of the production. We hope to reschedule this performance in the future. Venues will be in touch with ticket bookers soon.
The Marschallin has all the riches in the world, and a young lover – Octavian – to make her feel alive. But the one thing she can’t control is time, and fears the fading of her beauty.
When the Marschallin’s fortune-hunting cousin arrives in town seeking a suitable messenger to present a silver rose as way of proposal to the beautiful Sophie, she immediately offers the service of Octavian. He instantly falls for the youthful, Sophie but can the Marschallin set him free, and let true love prevail?
Richard Strauss’ sumptuous opera offers comedy and poignant drama in equal measure, with unforgettable arias, trios and waltzes. The bittersweet narrative focuses on the emotions of the characters, as we see the Marschallin learn to accept the passing of time.
Rebecca Evans returns in the iconic role of the Marschallin, having performed this for WNO in 2017. Also returning is WNO Music Director, Tomáš Hanus, conducting an orchestra of 90 players.
