Modern Day Slavery Madam Butterfly Discussions
This event has finishedOverview
WNO takes the story of Cio-Cio-San as inspiration for a series of digital talks considering a broad range of topics we are still grappling with in the 21st Century
Cio-Cio-San (Madam Butterfly) is treated very much as a commodity who has to work to support her family. She is a vulnerable 15 year old who is used and cast aside. Human traffickers are adept at targeting, entrapping and exploiting the vulnerable in our society.
Slavery is alive and well in the world today, it didn’t end with the 1807 Slave Trade Act in the UK marking the end of the transatlantic slave trade. It is on our doorstep, hidden in our communities, take-aways, hotels, car washes and nail bars among other places.
In this awareness-raising discussion, hear about the scale and nature of slavery today, how we can recognise victims and what we can do about it. Kim Ann Williamson MBE leads the discussion alongside an eminent panel of those working directly in the field combatting modern-day slavery in all its forms, including: Heather Lewis, Executive Director, Brave Bear Trust; Stephen Chapman, former Welsh Government Anti-Slavery Co-ordinator; Mike Wilkinson, Deputy Chief Executive of New Pathways; Ben Bruten, Head of the Employment Agency Standards Inspectorate; Ruth McKie, Soroptomists International Great Britain and Ireland; Richard Tumelty, South Wales Police; Richard James, Barnados.
