Following Government advice and the necessary continued closure of theatres across the UK, we regret to inform you that Welsh National Opera’s performances in Summer 2020 are unable to take place.
This includes the following performances:
- The Barber of Seville at Wales Millennium Centre is postponed, but will return for three further performances in September and October 2020
- The Nightingale and Bluebeard’s Castle double bill is cancelled at the Centre, as is the Sunday matinee performance of The Nightingale
- The free Explore Opera Day is also cancelled on the Sunday.
- The two double bill performances of The Nightingale and Bluebeard’s Castle are cancelled at the Royal Opera House, London.
We understand this will be of great disappointment, but current events have made it impossible for WNO to prepare, rehearse and stage these productions to open the Season in June.
If you have booked tickets for any of the affected performances the venue Customer Relation’s team will be in touch with you to explain the options available to you. Wales Millennium Centre will be in touch with you by email to explain the options available to you, during the week of 20 April 2020, and we are working with the Royal Opera House to contact customers as soon as possible. Please be aware that they are currently working through a large number of cancellations and rescheduled performances in chronological order, as the situation with Covid-19 has affected their entire spring programme. It would therefore be appreciated if you did not try to contact them directly in the meantime, in order to help them to process all customer refunds and exchanges as efficiently as possible at this difficult time.
The Emperor of China is enchanted by the song of The Nightingale, but the introduction of a mechanical version is no substitute and the Emperor becomes ill. Only when the real Nightingale returns does he realise that the true emotion of music cannot be imitated and he is restored to health.
Hans Christian Andersen’s tale is believed to have been inspired by the author’s unrequited love for soprano, Jenny Lind who was known as ‘Sweden’s Nightingale’. In collaboration with Blind Summit, the internationally renowned puppet-based theatre company, this charming fairy-tale opera will be brought to life by eight singers, 11 puppeteers and a cast of fabulous life-sized puppets. Stravinsky’s sweeping score will be conducted by WNO Music Director, Tomáš Hanus.
