Women: Who’s Telling Our Stories? Madam Butterfly Discussions
This event has finishedOverview
WNO takes the story of Cio-Cio-San as inspiration for a series of digital talks considering a broad range of topics we are still grappling with in the 21st Century
It is a fact that things rarely end well for most female protagonists in opera. Women characters are often victims of circumstance and those who do wield power in opera and other stories are portrayed as monsters.
Who is deciding today what stories are given airtime or public performances? How are women portrayed in the stories? Why is it important that we continue to question who is writing the stories and what they are about?
Chaired by CEO and founder of The WOW Foundation (WOW - Women of the World Festivals), Jude Kelly CBE leads the discussion with a panel of fabulous females working in theatre and TV today including: Lindy Hume, Madam Butterfly director; Caroline Clegg, director and choreographer; Lucy Brydon, director and screenwriter.
