Dear Abdul Shayek

4 August 2023
Director and associate director discuss libretto

We are deeply saddened to hear about the death of Abdul Shayek.

We had the honour of working with Abdul when he joined us as Associate Director for Migrations, and as Director for our series of short films, Rearrange.

Below is a letter written by the Migrations team, in Abdul's memory.

'Abdul. Everyone who worked on Migrations  for Welsh National Opera in 2021 and 2022 has been shocked and saddened by the news of your sudden and unexpected death. As an associate director on this ambitious project, you inspired everyone with your enthusiasm, acute analytical acumen and ebullient energy. We experienced the full force of your professional commitment to theatrical truth, and your deep involvement in your family life. Your second daughter was born during the rehearsals and none of us will forget your joy and fulfilment at this moment.

As we continue, we will honour and carry with us all that you have done. Giving space to urgent new work, new artists and audiences. Championing voices and stories that inspire communities and audiences to engage and to reimagine lives, societies and futures. Co-creating stories of politics, of identity, of possibility, of family and of love. And doing it with care.

We send our profound condolences to your wife Nicole, daughters, family and the wider Tara Theatre community.

Go in peace dear friend'
