WNO Family Concert heads to Birmingham

23 May 2018

This summer WNO is heading to Birmingham for the latest performance of our popular Family Concert. Following sell-out success in Southampton and Cardiff, we move further north to the Town Hall, Birmingham on Sunday 24 June.

The Family Concert is a fantastic way to introduce all members of the family to orchestral music through a fun-filled programme of familiar music from the world of opera, film and popular culture.  Presenter Wynne Evans and our soloists will lead you through the afternoon with background information on the music and operas as well as introducing the members and different sections of the orchestra.

Our three soloists have long-standing connections with WNO. Samantha Hay appeared as The Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute and Frasquita in Carmen and is a regular contributor to our Family and Schools concerts; James Cleverton has most recently been seen in Die Fledermaus; Fra Fee, who recently won the Whatonstage award for Best Supporting Actor in the West End production of The Ferryman, first performed with WNO as part of a Youth Opera group.  Conductor Timothy Burke has regularly conducted the WNO Orchestra in concert as well as performances of Tosca in our recent Spring opera season.

Before the entertainment starts inside the concert hall, we also have a series of free themed activities happening throughout the theatre foyers. We’ll show you what goes on behind the scenes of an opera company, with costumes, wigs and make-up demonstrations, a chance to try out some of the musical instruments, meet the players and even some competitions with prizes to be won.

The concert is an enjoyable and informal opportunity to experience a live orchestra and hear some instantly recognisable music from the opera and classical world. Don’t just take our word for it though, here’s what audiences at our previous Family Concerts have said:

Fabulous day out with our young children. They haven't stopped singing all the way home.

The interaction with the children and audience was great. As a family we thoroughly enjoyed thank you all and well done!

Exceeded expectation and my daughter thoroughly enjoyed it as did I.
