Dame Sarah Connolly & Tomáš Hanus with WNO Orchestra
,Overview
Schubert Symphony No. 8 'Unfinished'
Mahler Lieder Eines Fahrenden gesellen
Mahler Adagietto from Symphony No.5
Sibelius Symphony No.7
Decorated Mezzo-Soprano, Dame Sarah Connolly will join WNO Music Director, Tomáš Hanus and WNO Orchestra, for an unforgettable concert of music storytelling.
The concert will include the moving and intimate works of Schubert, Mahler and Sibelius. Composed in 1822, Schubert’s Symphony No 8 ‘Unfinished’ stretches the boundaries of the Classical style, sitting on the periphery between the Classical and Romantic eras. Mahler’s Lieder Eines Fahrenden gesellen (Songs of Wayfarer) was inspired by his own heartbreak, describing a love lost and in a turn of fortune, the third piece, also by Mahler, Adagietto from Symphony No 5, is said to be a love letter to Alma Schindler, his soon-to-be wife.
The concert will end with Symphony No 7 by Sibelius. In Sibelius’s own words the piece is one full of the ‘joy of life and vitality’ despite being written in response to an age of crisis - particularly the First World War.
We are delighted to have Dame Sarah returning to Cardiff in the spring when she plays Auntie in WNO’s new production of Britten’s Peter Grimes.
