Overview

Welcome to a virtual world of opera …

In Summer 2017 we used Virtual Reality technology to take audiences inside two popular productions, Madam Butterfly and The Magic Flute. This commission inspired and excited a new generation of theatre and opera audiences by blending together music, art and technology. Audiences were charmed by one of opera’s favourite heroines, Cio Cio San with an exclusive performance of ‘One Fine Day’ and interact with some four-legged friends during a performance of ‘How Soft, How Strong Your Magic Sound’. The experience was attended by over 12,000 visitors and toured in a custom built shipping container that started it’s journey in Cardiff before visiting Llandudno, Birmingham, Liverpool, London, Hong Kong, Copenhagen and Dubai.

Magic Butterfly was a co-creation by Welsh National Opera and REWIND VR.

Loved the experience, brilliant way to combine old tradition with new technology

Magic Butterfly was an award-winning project, with REWIND VR winning two awards at the VR Expo Awards – the Immersive Heritage & Leisure Award and The Immersive Art Award – along with the Gold Award for Creative Technology at the first ever Field Marketing BE Connected Awards.

It was INCREDIBLE! Truly fantastic!

What a fantastic way to introduce opera
