Overview

Welcome to a virtual world of opera …

Magic Butterfly was an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience by REWIND VR and WNO that welcomed over 10,000 visitors between July 2017 and March 2018, in Cardiff, Llandudno, Birmingham, Liverpool, London and Hong Kong.

The free experience reimagined scenes from Madam Butterfly and The Magic Flute, offering audiences a unique theatrical environment using classical music, motion capture and technology. Featuring an original WNO recording, this presentation was a perfect introduction to those new to, or unfamiliar with, the world of opera.

Those who participated in this pioneering event entered a specially designed shipping container and donned a VR headset, to explore two classic scenes from two iconic productions. Audiences could tame and interact with animals as Tamino from The Magic Flute and enjoyed an exclusive performance of Madam Butterfly’s 'One Fine Day' aria.

VR technology combines high quality imagery and sounds, allowing you to experience and explore virtual, artificial, 3D worlds and images using a mobile, headset and controller.

Magic Butterfly was an award-winning project, with REWIND VR winning two awards at the VR Expo Awards – the Immersive Heritage & Leisure Award and The Immersive Art Award – along with the Gold Award for Creative Technology at the first ever Field Marketing BE Connected Awards.
