Some people might think that classical music isn’t for children. Well, we beg to differ, and our family show Play Opera LIVE! does a grand job of showing why. Full of thrilling and enchanting music, this performance proves that opera and classical music can cater to audiences of all ages. Read on to discover our favourite musical moments from this year’s show…
Overture from The Flying Dutchman
Since this year we’re shipwrecked, it only felt right to feature a piece from Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, and the Overture fits perfectly. With a stormy beginning, created through the use of agitated strings, low brass and dramatic timpani strokes, you can truly imagine being on board a ship during a gale, feeling the swell of gigantic waves beneath you. This is contrasted and complimented by two further leitmotifs (musical themes), which evoke different feelings and experiences at sea. The piece therefore immerses you straight away in our swashbuckling story.
Dance of the Cygnets from Swan Lake
The iconic Dance of the Cygnets by Tchaikovsky is from what is arguably the most famous ballet of all time, and we simply love it! Playful and jubilant, with repeated staccato rhythms and an elegant use of oboes and flutes, this piece is sure to make children want to get up and dance.
Song to the Moon from Rusalka
Dvořák’s Song to the Moon is another beautiful piece of music, which begins like a lullaby, with a harp accompaniment and muted strings, while flutes and clarinets provide a delicate, whimsical quality. Taken from the opera Rusalka, which tells the tale of a water spirit who wishes to become human because she has fallen in love with a prince, this soprano aria expresses Rusalka’s adoration for him and her yearning to be with him. Bittersweet, emotional and with a sense of magic, it leaves audiences in pure awe.
Easter Hymn from Cavalleria rusticana
We couldn’t miss Mascagni’s Easter Hymn – a powerhouse song from an opera that holds a special place in WNO’s heart, as the first one we performed. While the plot of Cavalleria rusticana is focussed on two lovers whose affair has disastrous consequences, this hymn evokes an opposing sense of community, celebration and peace. Full strings along with booming brass and woodwinds that soften the texture altogether creates a soaring orchestration. This coupled with the powerful singing, featuring warm Romantic harmonies, builds a piece of music that is unforgettable.
Nessun dorma from Turandot
Last but never least is Puccini’s masterpiece, Nessun dorma. From the opera Turandot, which centres around a princess who requires potential suitors to risk their life if they want to marry her, this tenor aria portrays the main character Calaf’s determination to win her heart. As the aria builds in passion, the singing becomes more declamatory, while the orchestra increases in power. The climax is so glorious and emotional that you cannot help but feel moved.
