
Alex Brok
Alex was born in the Netherlands and trained in Theatre Design at the Amsterdam School of the Arts, before leaving for Stanford University in California. There, he taught Lighting Design and designed various productions within the theatre department including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, End Game and The Threepenny Opera. He went on to work for The San Francisco Opera on several productions. During his time in the US, one of his designs was selected for exhibit at the Prague Quadrennial of Design & Space in 2003. He later returned to the Netherlands and worked as a Lighting Designer for numerous opera, theatre and dance productions across Europe. In recent years, he has taken on the position of resident Lighting Designer in the Volksoper in Vienna.
Throughout his career, Alex has worked with leading directors and choreographers and given form to the concepts of leading scenographers in productions including: The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, West Side Story, Carmen, The Elixir of Love, The Magic Flute, Where the Wild Things Are, Death in Venice, Dido and Aeneas, Hansel and Gretel, The Cunning Little Vixen, La bohème, Jenůfa, The Flying Dutchman, The Barber of Seville, and Lulu.
Recent credits include: Il Trittico (Bavarian State Opera); Don Carlos (Stuttgart State Opera); Aida (Opéra Bastille); Così fan tutte (Teatro del Maggio Musicale, Florence); Dubarry, The White Horse Inn (Vienna Volksoper); and Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead (Dailes Theatre, Riga - nominated for five Latvian theatre awards).
Upcoming projects include: Cinderella, Spring Awakening (Vienna Volksoper); The Cunning little Vixen (Dutch Touring Opera); The Fountainhead (Dailes Theatre, Riga); The Flying Dutchman (Dutch National Opera); and Der Rosenkavalier (Latvian National Opera).
