Overview
David McVicar was born in Glasgow and trained as an actor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland). He was knighted in 2012 for his services to opera and made Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government. His productions have been staged across the UK, including Le nozze di Figaro, Death in Venice, The Magic Flute (ROH); Der Rosenkavalier, The Turn of the Screw (ENO); Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Glyndebourne); Il trittico, The Rake’s Progress, Madama Butterfly (Scottish Opera). He has worked extensively in Europe at the Opéra national de Paris, La Scala, Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, Festival D’Aix-en-Provence among others. Elsewhere he has worked at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Santa Fe Opera, Opera Australia and has directed numerous productions at The Metropolitan Opera, including Medea, Don Carlo, and Giulio Cesare.
