Overview
A traditional storyteller for the modern age, James Bonas combines imagination and intellect with a curiosity for technology and new forms, whether directing classical or contemporary theatre, opera, or dance. Recent work includes Sondheim’s Company for Génération Opéra, the world premiere of Isabelle Albouker’s L’Archipel(s) with La Maîtrise de L’Opéra Comique, Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos at Theater Magdeburg, and the French premiere of Abrahamsen’s Snow Queen for Opéra national du Rhin. Future plans include Manon for Theater Magdeburg and Die Zauberflöte for Gothenberg Opera. Recent projects include new ballets Mary, Queen of Scots (Scottish Ballet) with choreographer Sophie Laplane at the Edinburgh Festival, Lady Macbeth (Dutch National Opera) and Crime and Punishment (American Ballet Theatre), both with choreographer Helen Pickett. James also enjoys regular collaborations with orchestras including Aurora, with whom he has worked for BBC Proms.
