Overview
James Bonas is an English director who combines imagination and intellect with curiosity for technology and new forms, to create modern storytelling in classical or contemporary theatre, opera and dance. Recent opera includes Jonathan Dove’s Flight for RCS and the French premiere of Abrahamsen’s Snow Queen (Opéra national du Rhin) featuring video and animations by Grégoire Pont. Other collaborations with Pont include Orff’s Der Mond, Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges and L’heure espagnole (Opéra de Lyon). In Spring 2023 James makes his German debut directing Ariadne auf Naxos at Theater Magdeburg. He is also active in international dance: projects include the co-creation with Helen Pickett of an award-winning narrative ballet The Crucible (Scottish Ballet), and with Sophie Laplane the celebrated short film Dive. Future projects include creations for Canadian National Ballet, Scottish Ballet and Dutch National Ballet.
