Luis Chapa

Mexican tenor Luis Chapa is known as one of the best exponents of the dramatic repertoire of his generation. He recently made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Pinkerton in Anthony Minghella’s production of Madama Butterfly

Recent highlights include: Tosca (Opera North), Don José Carmen and Calaf Turandot (Slovakian National Opera, Seattle Opera), Canio Pagliacci (Israeli Opera, Deutsche Oper am Rhein), title role Andrea Chenier (National Theatre, Prague), and Radames Aida (Opera North, Teatro Wielki Poland and Croatian National Theatre).

Previous highlights include: Pinkerton Madame Butterfly (Portland Opera), title role Tannhäuser (Tiroler Festspiele Erl, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and Teatro Amazonas Manaus, Brazil), Pollione Norma (Opera North), and Samson Samson et Dalila (Staatstheater Darmstadt). 

Concert highlights include: Leoncavallo’s La Nuit de Mai (Košice Music Spring Festival, Slovakia and Slovakian National Opera), Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 (Orquesta Sinfonica of Nuevo Leon), and Verdi’s Requiem (Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra). Luis has also sung in Verdi galas with Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Pamplona, and for a Puccini programme with the BBC Concert Orchestra. 

Luis has worked with many notable conductors and directors including Marco Armilliato, Donato Renzetti, Asher Fish, Gustav Kuhn, Oliver von Dohnányi, Sir Richard Armstrong, Alexander Joel, John Copley, Christopher Alden, Calixto Bieito, Mariusz Trelinski and David McVicar.
