Lydia Abell

Lydia is a violist who lives in Cardiff and joined WNO in 2020. Lydia read Music at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and completed a master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Martin Outram. She has also received coaching from musicians including Lawrence Power, Christoph Richter, and members of the Hagen, Takács and Endellion string quartets.

Previously, Lydia held the CAVATINA Chamber Music Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music 2016-18. Her highlights include winning the Orlando International Chamber Music Competition 2017, performing at Wigmore Hall, and with Chamber Music New Zealand. Lydia has given recitals across Europe and her playing features on the recording Stravinsky: A Soldier’s Tale, conducted by Oliver Knussen, which includes music by Stravinsky, Birtwistle and Maxwell Davies.

Lydia was honoured to give the world premiere of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’s final work, Movement for String Quartet, at his memorial service in St John’s Smith Square and for the live broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
