Maria Bjørnson

Maria Bjørnson (1949-2002) was born in Paris and raised in England. She studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art and the Central School of Art and Design and began her career at the Citizens’ Theatre, Glasgow. Regarded by her peers as Britain’s most inspired set and costume designer for theatre, opera, and ballet, her many awards included the Prague Biennale Silver Medal for WNO’s Janáček cycle, two Tony Awards, two Outer Critics’ Circle Awards and two Drama Critics’ Awards for The Phantom of the Opera.
