Meet WNO

Phillip Rhodes

UK-based New Zealand baritone Philip Rhodes was born in Hawke’s Bay. He graduated in 2004 with a Diploma in Arts and Voice. He is a former Emerging Artist with New Zealand Opera and has since appeared regularly with the company in principal roles. In 2024/2025 he returns to the Royal Opera House to sing Don Fernando (Fidelio) and performs as Count Monterone (Rigoletto) at Irish National Opera. Last Season, he made his debut with Opera Australia as Giorgio Germont (La traviata), which he also sang for Scottish Opera, and Count Anckarström (Un ballo in maschera) with the Chelsea Opera Group.

Recent engagements: Escamillo Carmen (Scottish Opera, ROH, Opera North, WNO, Grange Festival); Figaro The Marriage of Figaro (Opera North); Scarpia Tosca (Nederlandse Reisopera); Father Hansel and Gretel and Ford Falstaff (Scottish Opera); and Speaker The Magic Flute (WNO).
