People dressed in gold and read top hat and tails are still in the prison. The lighting is bright and multi-coloured - like a rainbow.

Design Challenge

Welsh National Opera has been working with Creative & Cultural Skills to devise a new Set Design Challenge for members of National Skills Academy colleges.  The Set Design Challenge, which is now in its third year, will encourage young people to use their creativity to design a concept for a set for Rigoletto.  Learners from all disciplines will be encouraged to get involved in order to help them understand how their skills and knowledge can be applied in professional setting.

Three learners will be selected from the stage one entries to build their idea in a scale model set box based on the Donald Gordon stage in Cardiff’s Wales Millennium Centre.

What is the Design Challenge?

The Welsh National Opera Design challenge is an opportunity for students in National Skills Academy colleges and universities to apply their skills and creativity to a set design task set by industry professionals working for the Welsh National Opera.

Who is it for?

The Design Challenge is set exclusively for students in education member institutions of the National Skills Academy for Creative & Cultural.  Applicants can be from any subject discipline and need no prior knowledge or experience of set design or theatre. They just need to follow the brief and create a response.
