Creative Classrooms

Welsh National Opera and BBC NOW are joining forces to offer a new series of free CPD opportunities for teachers across the 2023-24 academic year. Focusing on creativity and exploring ways of embedding music in the classroom and how this links to the new Welsh Curriculum, the series will provide a mix of sessions accessible to KS1, 2 and 3 Teachers and TAs.

1. Friday 19th January 2024 (9.30am-3.30pm)
Making Music with BBC NOW and Welsh National Opera

Venue: 
BBC Hoddinott Hall, Wales Millennium Centre
Language: Session and resources in English

Led by Samantha Mason and Freya Wynn-Jones this daytime course is aimed towards teachers who are unsure how to integrate music into their classroom or need inspiration to revitalise their current plans. Overview: Through a series of workshops, explore different ways of embedding musicality and creativity into your teaching, from introducing music to developing a music and arts-based project. Participants will leave with practical activities to deliver in their own classrooms and an understanding of how these can link into the Welsh Curriculum. Please note: If you attended this session in 2023 some content may be the same.

1*. Thursday 29 February 2024 (9.30am – 3.30pm) 
Making Music with BBC NOW and Welsh National Opera
Venue: Weston Studio, WMC
Languages: Session and any resources in Welsh.

Led by Dyfed Wyn Evans and Ffion Glyn this daytime course is aimed at teachers who are unsure how to integrate music and drama into their classroom or need inspiration to revitalise their current plans.
Overview: Through interactive workshops, explore different ways of embedding musicality and creativity into your teaching, from quick wins to longer term outcomes. Participants will leave with practical activities to deliver in their own classrooms and an understanding of how these link into the Welsh Curriculum.

2. Tuesday 20th February 2024 (4.30m-6pm) CHANGED TO ONLINE SESSION
Singing for Wellbeing with WNO, North Wales
Venue: Online
Languages: This course will be delivered through the medium of Welsh. 

This course for Welsh-speaking teachers and members of school staff looking to improve their vocal health, overall wellbeing, and that of pupils. 

Overview: It’s well known that singing is beneficial for us all…but how can we use this knowledge effectively to help our own wellbeing and that of our pupils. An expert in understanding how the arts can impact health, WNO vocal leader Jennifer Pearson will guide you through exercises, warm-ups and songs, giving you the tools to preserve your voice. These sessions will help you gain knowledge of how you can support your voice in day-to-day life and how these skills can apply to your pupils in the classroom.  

3. Thursday 7th March 2024 (4.30-6pm)
Singing for Wellbeing with WNO, twilight session
Venue: Online  
Languages: This after school online session will be delivered through the medium of English.

Led by Jennifer Pearson, this after school session is aimed at classroom teachers and home educators of any level who want to gain knowledge of how you can support your voice in day-to-day life and how these skills can apply to your pupils in the classroom. 

Overview:  You will be guided through exercises, warm-ups and songs, giving you the tools to preserve your voice.

4. Monday 13th May 2024 (4.30-6pm) 
Exploring Ten Pieces, Totally Terrified with BBC NOW
Venue: Online
Languages: This after school online session will be delivered through the medium of English.

Led by Rachel Leach, this after school session is aimed towards classroom teachers and home educators of any level who want to make bringing music into the classroom quick and easy. If you’re totally terrified of music education, then this is for the course for you.

Overview: This session will explore activities and resources you can easily use in the classroom and at home to support the Welsh Curriculum. The BBC’s Ten Pieces initiative aims to open up the world of classical music to children and inspire them to develop their own creative responses to ten pieces of music through composition, dance or digital art. Walk away with quick activities or entire schemes of work you can use with your class or at home.
