Freelance workshop leaders in the West Midlands and Southampton

Are you a workshop leader specialising in drama, movement, visual arts, composing or singing? Do you have an interest in the art of bringing stories to life through music?

Welsh National Opera is looking to expand and diversify the pool of freelance workshop leaders and animateurs who deliver an expanding programme of engagement across the West Midlands and Southampton.

We are not just looking for opera singers, or opera experts, but people who can inspire hearts and minds through their own creativity so that the groups we work with can connect to our multifaceted art form.

Our programme aims to open up the world of opera to communities that have limited experience of the artform and we are keen to have professionals who are representative of those communities on our team.

We are working in primary schools, special schools and secondary schools in North Birmingham and the Black Country and have a Youth Opera company for 8 to 14 year olds based in Lozells. We work with refugees with young children and have future plans to develop work in care homes and hospitals.

In Southampton, we will be working in primary and secondary schools across the city, running taster sessions for a Youth Opera company starting in 2022 and developing a year-long programme of music and storytelling with the refugee and asylum-seeker community.

Our programme is multifaceted. We aim to get people singing whatever their age and ability; share stories, whether lived or fictional; write opera scenes and songs; devise drama and movement and perform in almost any space.

We are particularly keen to hear from people representative of the varied ethnic groups living in the West Midlands and Southampton, respectively; those with LGBTQ+ identities, neurodivergent and/or d/Deaf and disabled and those that have experienced socio and economic barriers.

Please send a CV, statement, or short 2 minute video, outlining your skills and experience and what you could bring to our programme to: - West Midlands Southampton
