Welsh National Opera is the national opera company of Wales, and one of the UK’s most internationally celebrated cultural institutions. With its own permanent chorus and orchestra, WNO’s performing and administrative home is the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff but it has broad geographic reach, touring to places and communities across Wales and England, as well as overseas. With a global reputation for its world-class performance standards, WNO is a compelling contributor to the cultural landscape, both in terms of critically acclaimed main-scale productions, and ambitious artist development, schools and community programmes through which it seeks to engage a diverse range of participants and audiences.

At a time of fundamental change in the UK arts funding landscape, WNO is now seeking to appoint a dynamic new General Director & CEO, capable of developing an inclusive and holistic artistic vision, with sound business acumen and the drive to build a high-performing, sustainable future for the Company.

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the General Director & CEO will have full responsibility for the design and delivery of the Company’s vision and mission, artistically and operationally. They will bring experience of creating and realising an equivalent artistic programme, building and nurturing teams, and engaging successfully with a broad range of stakeholders and partners, as well as knowledge of commercial enterprise, diversifying income streams and leading through change. While professional experience within an opera company is not essential, candidates should demonstrate a personal affinity for the art form, a working knowledge of opera repertoire, and a commitment to advocate for WNO and the wider opera sector.
