Last week, Wales Millennium Centre hosted the opening night of Welsh National Opera’s new production of Candide. Bernstein’s whacky operetta, inspired by Voltaire’s satirical novel, became the basis for a glorious night of wonderful singing and playing, mind-boggling animation and a twisting story that took us around the world over the course of an evening. Here’s what our audience in Cardiff thought of our new production.

Our Facebook comments were full of glowing praise:
Suzanne Murphy – Fantastic performance… wonderful conducting from Karen Kamensek and brilliant singing of Claudia Boyle. An amazing production and well worth a visit to WNO.
Kevin Jones – That was fantastic. The animations were excellent and added another dimension.
Pat Davies – It was absolutely brilliant – the music, the performances, the animations and that stupid, stupid story. Knocked it out of the park WNO
Ann Whittaker - I can honestly say I have never seen anything like it!
It was outrageous, spectacular, innovative and brilliantly sung and acted by the cast. The orchestra were magnificent and I will certainly be buying tickets to go again. Nothing could be better as a first experience of opera.
Gordon Collins – Congratulations! A wonderful evening so fresh and very clever. Really enjoyed it.
Candide tours this summer to Truro, Llandudno, Oxford, Birmingham and Brecon until Saturday 15 July. Don’t miss your chance to see Bernstein’s operetta in a production unlike anything ever staged at WNO before.
