Candide is not your typical opera. Some might describe it as exhilarating, others wacky, heartbreaking or uplifting. We personally think it suits all of these descriptions and more! But what does this weird and wonderful production have on offer for you? Let’s dive into it.

A musical adventure
Candide is an adventure in all aspects, and the music makes no exception. Composed by Bernstein, it has the feel of a musical while simultaneously preserving elements of operetta and jazz. The songs also rouse a wide range of emotions, the likes of Oh, Happy We and You Were Dead, You Know making us smile and laugh, while arias such as Nothing More Than This conjure deep sorrow. Listen out for Make Our Garden Grow, the beautiful finale of this musical journey which might just bring a tear to your eye.
Visual storytelling
One of the most unique parts of this production is the animations, which are hand-drawn by illustrator and animator Grégoire Pont. These are used for the duration of the performance, projected onto chains which hang from the stage, and visually bring the story to life in extraordinary detail. Often, these animations also act as integral props and parts of the set, for example cars and houses, the performers interacting with them as if stepping into an animated world. It’s truly the stuff of magic!

Eye-catching costumes
The costumes in Candide are nothing short of fabulous! Re-purposing and transforming old clothing, they are innovative works of art. One dress worn by The Old Lady, for example, is made entirely of shirts found in charity shops. There is also a punk feel throughout the costumes which challenges and merges with 18th-century fashion. Think denim, mesh, diamante, corsets and high-heeled boots…
Broadway sparkle
If you’re a fan of musical theatre and dance, you’re going to love Candide! The production features a troupe of eight talented dancers who bring brilliant energy and pizazz to the performance. Along with the WNO Chorus and guest artists, who also get involved with the dancing, they add a delightful dash of Broadway into the mix.
An important message
While the plot of Candide is chaotic and at times dizzying, there is a clear takeaway message at its heart… The world is imperfect and so is humankind, and we all face
struggles and pain. However, we should try to make the best of our lives, and to care for one another. This message serves as a powerful reminder of what really matters.
With all of these ingredients combined, Candide makes for a thrilling watch. And while we might not live in the Best of all Possible Worlds, we certainly think it’s a strong contender for the title of Best of all Possible Shows!
