How to pick an opera

9 January 2025

If you’re interested in seeing an opera but have never been before, it can feel difficult to know where to start. Just like with film, TV and literature, all operas are different. They vary by musical style, language, costumes, length and fall into a variety of different genres. Whether your thing is Hollywood blockbusters, romantic dramas or family favourites, we have something this Season that is sure to please.

For fans of: Gritty crime drama

If you’re into gritty crime dramas like Broadchurch, Happy Valley, Luther and Line of Duty, you’ll love Peter Grimes. This opera tells the story of a fisherman haunted by rumours and suspicion surrounding the mysterious deaths of his apprentices. Set in a small fishing village in Suffolk, it has the intrigue and drama you’ll love and features complex characters and rich music.

For fans of: Hollywood blockbusters

If big blockbusters like Pretty Woman, The Shawshank Redemption and Apocalypse Now are your thing, then our Opera Favourites at the Movies concert could be perfect for you. Audiences can look forward to music from major blockbusters and this concert format is a great way to get familiar with the music of opera before seeing a full-scale production.

For fans of: Period dramas

If you love Bridgerton, Pride and Prejudice, Downton Abbey or The Crown then The Marriage of Figaro is the perfect opera for you to start with. Our production has all the elements of a great period drama- romance, opulent period costumes, charm and humour, and as one of the most well-known operas, it’s a great place to start.

For fans of: Romance

If you enjoy epic romances like The Notebook, Gone with the Wind or Titanic, the perfect night out for you could be Dame Sarah Connolly & Tomáš Hanus with WNO Orchestra in concert. This event is packed full of music from the Romantic era that will provoke all of the emotion and passion that you love in your favourite blockbusters and should feel just as dramatic. The music tells a passionate story, inspired by love letters, heartbreak and lost love from composers Schubert, Mahler and Sibelius.

For fans of: Family Favourites

If you love musical movies to watch with the whole family like Wonka, Frozen and The Greatest Showman then Play Opera LIVE will be a perfect for you and the little ones. These relaxed performances feature recognisable music, and you’re encouraged to sing, laugh and dance along as the host introduces you to WNO Orchestra, its musicians, sections and instruments.

Whichever event you choose, your first opera or classical music performance is a special moment, and it may be easier to attend than you may think. WNO productions start from £13 and don’t have a formal dress code. Our handy surtitles mean that you’ll know exactly what’s going on, even if it’s not sung in English and everyone is welcome, whether it’s your first time or 50th. We hope to see you soon and that you will enjoy whichever performance you choose.
