Make WNO your new year's resolution

Five dancers swoosh their brightly coloured dresses.

We’re barely a week into 2023 and new year’s resolutions of diets, gyms and using the car less are already becoming a hindrance and you can’t bear another week of the ’new year, new me’ that you promised, let alone a whole year. We at Welsh National Opera are right there with you, so have decided to offer some alternative ideas that will transport you to new worlds, give back to communities and leave you with memories that will last longer than your resolutions.

Go to a classical concert

WNO have the perfect escape from the January Blues… a trip to Vienna. Let WNO Orchestra transport you to the Austrian capital and enjoy the very best of Viennese music. From the famous Blue Danube by Strauss II to Strauss I’s rollicking Radetzky March, Korngold’s nostalgic Straussiana Polka, and more, this is sure to be a concert to kick start your musical new year.

Introduce your little one(s) to opera

If your children are already bored of their brand-new Christmas toys, then why not bring them to Wales Millennium Centre on Sunday 19 February for a day full of fun, dinosaurs and free activities such as treasure hunts and face painting? Meet members of WNO Orchestra, learn fun facts as you sing, dance and clap along to some of our favourite pieces of music from stage and screen in a relaxed setting at our Play Opera LIVE!

Watch a new production

Continue your opera resolutions by transporting yourself to a land of mystery, magic and adventure. Mozart’s The Magic Flute is the perfect first opera, with stunning sets, beautiful music and a witty story. Director Daisy Evans (Cherry Town, Moscow and Don Pasquale) gives this operatic favourite a modern twist, bringing the story and the music to life like never before.

Support a new opera

This Spring, we will present Blaze of Glory! a new commission set in a 1950s Welsh Valleys’ community. Alongside a comprehensive programme of work in the community with Male Voice Choirs, Scouts Cymru and in care homes, Blaze of Glory! truly celebrates the Land of Song.

You can support our work and really make a difference in communities, by donating to Blaze of Glory! which will be matched through a £25,000 grant from Colwinston Charitable Trust.

Create, reach and inspire

If you’re looking for an opera resolution that you can achieve from the comfort of your own home, then joining WNO Friends or even a simple one-off donation would really make a difference to the work we do. Your donation will help us bring opera to the stage and take music into our communities, with programmes such as WNO Teach and Cradle Choir, a fun singing group for people living with dementia and their loved ones

Whatever you settle on for your resolutions, Welsh National Opera wishes you a very happy, healthy and musical 2023.
