Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture
Richard Strauss Four Last Songs
Brahms Symphony No 1
Inspired by William Shakespeare’s tragic play, WNO Orchestra and WNO Music Director Tomáš Hanus navigate the turbulent relationship between the Montagues and the Capulets, painting a vivid image of doomed love, fate and sacrifice in Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture.
An ode to life in all its intensities, Strauss's Four Last Songs is a sublime swan song and fond farewell to the world. Warm, wise and reflective in nature, this much-loved collection of songs will take your breath away and will see soprano Chen Reiss join WNO Orchestra for her first appearance with the Company.
Completing the programme is one of the greatest symphonies of the Austro-German tradition, Brahms’s Symphony No 1, which combines the intracity of a Bach fugue with the energy of a Beethovenian masterpiece. An inexhaustible fountain of deep pleasure and dramatic flair, this piece is full of exciting twists and turns that’ll keep you at the edge of your seat.
