2023/24 Season now on sale

1 March 2023

Today, on St David’s Day – the Welsh Patron Saint of Wales – we are delighted to share that tickets to Welsh National Opera’s 2023/2024 Season are now on sale.

Featuring a twice-grammy-award winning opera, critically acclaimed productions, young love, unhappy marriages, obsession and tragedy, we have it all. The new Season brings new faces to our stages, with Olga Pudova making her Company debut as Violetta in Verdi’s luscious La traviata and Roderick Williams making his Company debut as Traveller in Britten’s magnificent Death in Venice. We also see the return of some familiar faces, including Rebecca Evans as the sassy Despina in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, which will be conducted by WNO Music Director Tomáš Hanus and Puccini’s delicious three-course operatic feast, Il trittico sees the return of WNO Conductor Laureate Carlo Rizzi.

In September 2023, we open with the Welsh debut of Osvaldo Golijov’s Ainadamar, which reimagines the life and legacy of Spanish poet and playwright, Federico García Lorca, told through the memories of his muse, the actress Margarita Xirgu. This dazzling display of opera and flamenco is directed by Olivier-winning choreographer, Deborah Colker.

Autumn also brings WNO’s elegant and highly charged, five-star production of La traviata, which will leave you in no doubt why this heart-wrenching tale of thwarted love, scandal and self-sacrifice is a favourite with audiences across the world. Complementing the Season, a musical voyage which is out of this world - a space-themed edition of our interactive family show, Play Opera LIVE, presented by our audience favourite, Tom Redmond.

In Spring 2024, we take you back to school with a brand-new version of Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte which follows four sixth formers as they learn a valuable lesson in love, life, and liberty when their teacher involves them in a secret experiment. For our second opera of the Season, we pop over to Italy with Britten’s atmospheric Death in Venice. In this new production, follow the renowned author Gustav von Aschenbach as he travels to Venice in search of beauty and meaning. While there, he falls in love with youthful aristocrat Tadzio and becomes increasingly divorced from reality as his obsession progresses to a fever pitch.

Our Summer 2024 Season at Wales Millennium Centre sees the internationally renowned Director, Sir David McVicar, return to WNO with Puccini’s Il trittico. WNO Conductor Laureate Carlo Rizzi leads our world-class Orchestra in a rare opportunity to enjoy this triptych of operas in one night, just as the composer intended. Il tabarro gazes on an unhappy marriage with murderous consequences, Suor Angelica explores a nun’s sacrifice and familial yearning when sent to a convent to repent her sins and Gianni Schicchi shines a light on the deception and greed among a family following a dispute over a missing will.

With a range of accessible tickets and multi-buy offers to take advantage of, we hope that you’ll join us for many WNODERFUL moments during our 2023/2024 Season.
