What is Augmented Reality?

19 June 2018

Augmented Reality:  A technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.

This summer WNO will be introducing our new digital project for 2018, Rhondda Rebel.

Rhondda Rebel will bring suffragette Margaret Haig Thomas (Lady Rhondda), the heroine of our summer production, Rhondda Rips It Up!, to life right before your eyes by blending Augmented Reality with performance and music to create a new stimulating experience.

But what is Augmented Reality (AR)?

It is a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world. In Rhondda Rebel audiences will go on a journey using a mixture of digital technology and live actors. We have chosen to re-create the moment that Lady Rhondda would have been tried and sentenced for blowing up a post-box in Newport.

The project will launch at Sessions House in Usk from 22 - 24 June, where we will be combining existing technology and new technology to help find a new way to bring opera and theatre to life.

The unique thing about AR is the fact that you can interact with a live environment, as well as using digital elements to create an avatar that will be seen through the iPad, in this case Lady Rhondda.

After the success of our VR project Magic Butterfly in 2017, we are eager to offer a new digital experience for audiences to try that is still relevant to the main scale work that we are producing this summer at WNO.

The performance running time for each session is 10 mins and there can be up to 4 people taking part in the activity at any one time. You can book your tickets on our website, and we ask that you please arrive 5 mins before your booked slot.

We will also offer a limited number of restricted view seats on the day but this will done on a first come first served basis.

Rhondda Rebel will then move to Insole Court and Pierhead building in Cardiff before heading out further on tour.
